Step into Truvy’s beauty salon, a bustling shop where the women of Chinquapin gather not only for hairdos, but for the latest gossip, laughter, and to share the ups and downs of life. Truvy, played by Hannah Perdue, and her quirky assistant Annelle (Keriann Menz) welcome a colorful cast of clients: the sharp-tongued Ouiser (Laura Miller), the sweet-toothed Clairee (Kim Hopcraft), the strong-willed M’Lynn (Susan Wilson), and her radiant daughter Shelby (Lucy Hoy).
Steel Magnolias blends humor with poignant drama, creating a show filled with witty banter, heartfelt moments, and powerful performances. As the women of the salon lead their exciting lives, Shelby, a lifelong diabetic, gets married and starts to grow a family. As complications arrive, Shelby courageously faces a life-threatening pregnancy. Through the ups and downs of life, the bonds between these women are tested and strengthened — highlighting the beauty, humor, and love of enduring friendship.
“This film has been a classic since it premiered in 1989 and worked its way into the hearts of millions with unforgettable performances,” said Ryan Bowie, who is directing this production. “The play, which came first, is entirely composed of women and only takes place in Truvy’s beauty shop. Theatre in its truest form is meant to teach the audience something and leave them with something to chew on when they leave.” The Avalon Theatre Executive Director continued. “This show explores the ways six women experience life. From birth, death, rebirth, and ultimately victory over circumstances, and I couldn’t think of a more timely and important piece that is still teaching us something decades later.”
Tickets for STEEL MAGNOLIAS are $15 for adults and $8 for children 13 and under. Tickets can be purchased at theavalontheatre.org/events or at The Avalon Theatre box office. The box office is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, and one hour before all events. The Avalon Theatre is a 501c(3) non-profit organization located at 121 S.
